15 Shows Like 'Bridgerton' to Watch After Finishing Season 2

Did you watch it all in a day? Us too.

By Tara Bitran March 29, 2022

Already finished Seasons 1 and 2 of Bridgerton and burning for more? Well, rather than shiver in anticipation of Lady Whistledown's next post, we've got your fill of fellow saucy period romps — along with some swoon-worthy modern fare — to distract you as you wait for the next Bridgerton love story in Season 3.

Downton Abbey

Jaap Buitendijk/Focus Features, via Everett Collection

1. Downton Abbey

Six seasons Appeal: Bridgerton may lean more into high society than the upstairs-downstairs dynamics of the Abbey, but both series trace the entanglements of a community where the prospect of scandal runs high. Set at the grand Downton estate in England, circa 1912 to 1927 — a time of great societal change in the United Kingdom — Downton charts the lives of the Crawley family and their intimate employees, teeming with the same kind of slow-burn romances, independent-minded younger sisters and omniscient dowagers that you'll find in the ton.

Reign

Ben Mark Holzberg/The CW, via Everett Collection

2. Reign

Four seasons Appeal: We just finished a rewatch binge of this series and couldn't recommend a comparable series to Bridgerton higher. Set during the early life and rule of Mary, Queen of Scots, Reign takes a contemporary lens to the typical period drama with modern fashions (courtesy of BHLDN), instrumental covers of modern pop songs — looking at you, Sam Smith's "Stay with Me" and Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do" — and enough racy romances and love triangles to make you question if this took place in France or the Bridgerton household. A little tease: There's even a scene where someone is humped out a window to their death. We're not joking.

Outlander

3. Outlander

Four seasons (+ Season 5 on Starz) Appeal: Travel back to a different time and place than Regency era England... but with a steamy romance that burns just as bright as Simon and Daphne's. Based on the series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander puts you in the shoes of a WWII nurse who happens upon a mythical set of stones that transport her back to 1740s Scotland, where she meets Highlander Jamie Fraser and is taken in by Clan MacKenzie. The series spans continents, timelines, and near-danger at every turn, but the fire of Claire and Jamie's relationship never dims.

Versailles

4. Versailles

Three seasons Appeal: Add a dash of French history with your opulence, and you've got Versailles. As King Louis XIV rises to power, he commissions the construction of the ornate future home of Marie Antoinette and bastion of tourists today. But not to worry. This isn't the kind of history you'd find in a stuffy textbook. There are copious amounts of debauchery, betrayal and sexcapades in the court of the Sun King.

Cable Girls

Enrique Baro Ubach/Netflix

5. Cable Girls

Six seasons Appeal: If you're missing the flair of Bridgerton's fashion, Cable Girls is here to step in with outfit inspo from 1920s Madrid. This Spanish period drama chronicles a group of "cable girls" who become fast and loyal friends at Spain's first national telephone company. Empowered and ambitious, these women rise through the ranks, defy convention, and find solace in the arms of lovers past and present. They're exactly the kinds of women Eloise would yearn to become.

The Borgias

Jonathan Hession/Showtime Network, via Everett Collection

6. The Borgias

Three seasons Appeal: Clawing for power and title in a fickle world? Sounds like the social climbers of the ton. But on The Borgias, this infamous family is trying to make their mark in the viper's nest of Renaissance Italy, using all their fields of influence and political prowess to rise to the papacy. The Borgia family is fairly less warm and comforting than the Bridgertons, but still steeped in complicated affairs of the heart and mind.

Elite

Matías Uris/Netflix

7. Elite

Four seasons (soon to be five) Appeal: Just as Bridgerton's intrigue hinges on who'll discover the identity of the author behind the ton's gossip rag, each season of Elite also kicks off with a mystery begging to be solved... and rather murderous ones at that. This Spanish drama isn't necessarily period, but the students of Las Encinas revel in plenty of clandestine romps, heartaches and eventful balls — scratch that, raucous parties — that would rival any front page of Lady Whistledown's scandal sheet.

The Crown

Des Willie/Netflix

8. The Crown

Four seasons Appeal: While we may only see slivers of the private lives of King George III and Queen Charlotte in Bridgerton, The Crown busts the curtains wide open on Britain's current royals. From the beginning of Queen Elizabeth's reign through till Princess Diana enters the fold, feast your eyes on British history with a production scale that will be sure to fill the ballroom-size void left you've consumed all of Bridgerton.

Medici

9. Medici

Three seasons Appeal: The Medicis are one of the most famous dynasties in Italy, and these Florentine artistic patrons made quite the name for themselves — and a list of enemies during the Renaissance. Navigating a family's position in society and love is no easy task, and is a cross to bear that heads of the family like Anthony Bridgerton would recognize.

Sex Education

John Hall/Netflix

10. Sex Education

Three seasons Appeal: On Bridgerton, it's more than clear that the young ladies of the ton have zero clue as to how sex works. (Remember Eloise's investigation into pregnancy?) Sex Education, on the other hand, flips the script and has a teenage whiz to teach high school students the wonders of sex — and we don't just mean STDs. You can also retrace Simone Ashley's Netflix roots before she joined Season 2 of Bridgerton as Kate Sharma.

Dash & Lily

Alison Cohen Rosa/Netflix

11. Dash & Lily

One season Appeal: This holiday treat of a one-season rom-com establishes the epistolary romance of two lovelorn teens in New York City. Hoping for connection but afraid to let it in, Dash and Lily remind us of a few other young lovers who think denying their feelings will make them go away — not. But more than that, Dash & Lily introduces the living legend of confidence and wisdom that is Mrs. Basil E., who, if she were born 200 years earlier, would have been best friends with Lady Danbury and co-host of her gambling nights for married ladies.

Call the Midwife

Neal Street Productions/PBS, via Everett Collection

12. Call the Midwife

Nine seasons Appeal: There are more seasons of Call the Midwife than there are Bridgerton siblings, so your Netflix queue is sure to be filled to the brim with this heartfelt period drama. Adapted from the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, the series is similarly set in London, but here, it's on the East End during the 1950s following a community of nuns at Nonnatus House. The midwives develop a sisterhood and bond with their fellow nurses and the patients they treat, similar to the tight-knit female friendship we see between Penelope and Eloise.

Crashing

13. Crashing

One season Appeal: Care to see Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) before he grew out those long sideburns? Peep Phoebe Waller-Bridge's one-season comedy Crashing, which follows a group of friends in their 20s who live in a dilapidated former hospital. Bailey plays Sam, who's, let's say, a very randy flatmate.

Derry Girls

Hat Trick Productions/Netflix

14. Derry Girls

Two seasons Appeal: You can take the girl out of Derry, but you can't take Derry out of the girl. Even though she's the mastermind behind the enigmatic Lady Whistledown, Bridgerton's Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) first came to Netflix by way of Northern Ireland on Derry Girls. The series charts the angst amidst a group of five friends set during The Troubles in the 1990s. The comedy is short, bawdy and, crazily, yes, is now considered a period drama. For bonus content, tune into the Derry Girls cast competing in Season 3 of The Great British Baking Show: Holidays for some yuletide cheer any time of the year.

Grey's Anatomy

Eric McCandless/ABC, via Everett Collection

15. Grey's Anatomy

17 seasons Appeal: The Shonda Rhimes series that started the empire. If you're curious to go on a deep Shondaland journey, might we suggest beginning with Grey's Anatomy, her first baby that taught women that you are the sun and that's all there is to it. Seventeen seasons and counting, the show centers on the romances, risks and rewards of the doctors at Seattle Grace hospital. And, yes, it's the birthplace of McDreamy and McSteamy.
